SEO optimization for products
Last month we wrote about improving SEO of your e-store pages from PrestaShop Dashboard. Since we got some positive responses, we have decided to provide some practical SEO advice on another, very important part of your PrestaShop store – products. It might take some time to make everything right for each product, but in the end, if this brings in more customers and therefore sales, it’s a well-worth investment.
- Make sure that your product Meta data is in order.
Navigate to Catalog > Products > Select and edit a product > SEO and make sure to take care of the following fields:
Meta title: Public title for the product page and for search engines. You can also leave the field blank to use the product name.
Meta description: This description will appear in search engines. You need a single sentence, shorter than 160 characters (including spaces).
Friendly URL: Which can be called the “human-readable URL” and is generated from the product’s name. To have this option enabled, navigate to Dashboard > Traffic & SEO > SEO & URLs.
We wrote about Meta data in more detail in our last article, which you can read here.
- Invest some time in creating proper tags for your products:
This feature is not only good for SEO but also can improve your store’s search accuracy. Tagging enables you to associate your products with keywords, which means your customers can use the keywords to easily and quickly find the products they are looking for.
For instance, let’s say customer wants to find a device to track his fitness activity. To find the product corresponding to his or her search, you can create a tag to associate “Fitness tracker” with “Apple watch”. That way the customer can find a product to match his needs and you will have a better chance in selling products that you want to promote.
After implementing the tags, your customer search results will also depend on the tags that you have associated with the products.
You can do this by navigating to Catalog > Products > Select and edit a product > Information in PrestaShop 1.6 and Catalog > Products > Select and edit a product > Options in PrestaShop 1.7
- Take the advantage of URL redirecting
If you have a product that constantly bring in a lot of visitors and potential buyers, make sure to use its traffic once the product is no longer available. Best thing you can do in this scenario is to use URL redirecting, which lets you transfer all the users that visit a specific product link to another product or category of your selection. Below we have written steps for both PrestaShop 1.6 and PrestaShop 1.7 on how to use this feature.
Steps to take in PrestaShop 1.6
Navigate to Catalog > Products > Select and edit a product > Information > Set “Enabled” to NO.
After the selection, “Redirect when disabled” field should show up. From there you have two options:
301 Moved Permanently – select this if you want to permanently display another product instead.
302 Moved Temporarily – select this if you want to temporarily display product instead.
It’s important to choose permanent redirect if you think it’s going to be permanent and vice-versa to be search engine friendly.
After selecting the redirection options, select a product that you can search for in “Related product” field. After saving these changes, all the incoming traffic will be redirected to your newly selected product.
Steps to take in PrestaShop 1.7
Navigate to Catalog > Products > Select and edit a product > SEO > Redirection page. Have in mind that this redirection will only work if product is only disabled.
From there you can choose the redirect that suits you best as described above. Good thing about PrestaShop 1.7 is that it also lets you choose where to redirect the traffic to traffic or to product, so be wise with your choice.
And that is it! Take care of these 3 steps to make your product information more SEO friendly. If you want to implement something more advanced and need any technical help with PrestaShop, be sure to reach out to us at [email protected] and we can help you with that!
